Record Numbers For 10th Peak To Pub Race At Mt Hutt (08-Oct-08)

A record number of people (250) competed under blue skies in Mt Hutt’s 10th annual Peak to Pub race on Sunday (2 October 2008).

The Peak to Pub began with a 100m dash to strap on skis or snowboards before racing down the slopes of Mt Hutt. This was followed by an 18km mountain bike dash down the ski area’s access road before an 11km run finishing outside the Blue Pub in Methven.

New Zealand triathlete Jos Hoetjes beat his brother and defending champion Luke Hoetjes to be first man across the line. Jos finished the men’s event in 1 hour 2 minutes 23 seconds, beating his brother by two minutes. Methven’s Braden Currie finished third in 1hr 4mins 49 seconds.

Rebecca Rae won the women’s event in a blistering time of 1 hour 13 minutes and 32 seconds, followed by 2006 winner Madeline Martin (1 hour 19 minutes and 21 seconds) and Jenny Stewart (1 hour 21 minutes and 39 seconds).

Janet Cuttles and Rob Howell won the veteran events with Howell finishing fourth overall.

The Tall Poppy’s took out the women’s team event, the Mount Hutt College A Team won the men’s team event and the mixed team event was won by the Rocks.

Mt Hutt Race Coordinator Richard Murphy said the high number of competitors participating made for a great atmosphere both on and off the mountain.

‘It certainly lived up to expectations with a real tight race right to the finish line,” he said. “We look forward to seeing everyone back next year.”

Sponsors of the Peak to Pub race included Big Al’s Snowsports Methven, Columbia, Sunto and HEAD.
